Spreadsheets are free, familiar, and heroic — right up until three volunteers edit the same tab the night before your event.
A spreadsheet can describe an event schedule; it can’t enforce one. The Skills Fest differs in exactly that way: capacity, waitlists, level rules, and schedule conflicts are enforced at registration, families enter their own data through signup codes instead of a volunteer retyping forms, and rosters, check-in lists, and attendance reports generate themselves from live data.
Spreadsheets still win for ad-hoc analysis and one-off lists — which is why everything in The Skills Fest exports to CSV. The comparison below is about running the event, not storing data.

Usually capacity: the sheet accepts row 31 in a 20-seat class without complaint. The second break is versioning — two volunteers, two copies, one event.
